The Body`s Natural Renewal System

Our body is made up of many trillions of cells that work in harmony to ensure that we function optimally, adapt to our environment and maintain good health. As part of this normal process many millions of these cells die every day and need to be replaced constantly. The renewal system of our body is a crucial part of staying healthy and also of recovering from injuries and from physical training.

If we take for example a weight training workout where you subject your muscles to excessive stress, you will actually be causing some micro-tears of these muscle tissues. The body responds to this by creating new muscle cells and it does this through the its own built in renewal process, namely adult stem cells.

Stem cells, by definition, are cells that have the ability to become any kind of cell in the body. There are two basic types of stem cells, and it’s important to understand the difference. Most people have heard about embryonic stem cells with all the media coverage they’ve been receiving in the last decade or so. These are extracted from 8-10-day-old embryos and that’s why there’s so much controversy surrounding their research and use. Scientists are busy figuring out how we can use them for the treatment of diseases and it offers a lot of hope.

What we’re talking about here are adult stem cells, which are present in your body from the day you are born and are naturally produced in your bone marrow. Recent research has found that they are at the core of your body’s natural renewal system. Your adult stem cells are your body’s master cells as they have the ability to become virtually any type of cell in your body—they can become cells of the heart, liver, pancreas, muscle, brain, eyes, joints and more.

The mechanism for cell renewal works like this: the tissues or organs in need send chemical messengers into the bloodstream. For example, the micro-tears in muscle tissue from your workout will prompt the release of special enzymes into the bloodstream. These chemical messengers travel to your bone marrow and cause the release of stem cells into the bloodstream. The muscle tissue will release a second set of chemical messengers which attract the stem cells to migrate into the muscle tissue, cause them to proliferate and transform themselves into healthy cells of that tissue. This is how the muscle cells recover from training and everybody knows that recovery time is critical in order to maximize your results.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that my capacity for recovery and recuperation has declined as I have gotten older. With aging and the physical, emotional and environmental stresses to which we are exposed, our stem cell physiology becomes compromised, meaning that fewer adult stem cells get released into the bloodstream, causing a decline in your body’s ability to renew itself. The adult stem cells are still in the bone marrow, but unless they get released into the bloodstream they can’t do their work.

Canadian scientist Christian Drapeau, a McGill graduate, has become a world-renowned expert on adult stem cells and has discovered components of some unique plants that support the natural release of your own adult stem cells from your bone marrow. Increasing the number of naturally released adult stem cells in circulation will help the body to renew itself and keep you more vibrant and youthful. This exciting information was discovered so recently that most people, including health specialists, don’t know about it yet.

Tissue repair and renewal is an ongoing process and health is a balance between tissue renewal and cellular loss. It stands to reason that if you can improve your mechanism for cell renewal by releasing extra stem cells and if you can remove blockages to blood flow, better health and performance will be a by-product.

This is yet another reason to maintain a healthy diet of real food and reduce the intake of refined and processed foods as well as sugar.

As a health professional for over 30 years I see amazing improvements in people`s health and recovery when they adopt a healthier diet. Now that you have a better understanding of the body`s renewal system it will hopefully make it easier to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
